Back - If (if) a thick back is on your list of priorities, then you should, in my opinion be deadlifting, and deadlifting regularly - So if deadlifts are king, then rows are the queen. Super sore hamstrings from the one-and-half rep Romanians the other day meant it was sensible to avoid deadlifts for this particular workout - Instead, the focus was placed on horizontal pulling movements, using both a barbell and dumbells, and a hybrid row/pulldown machine (which I'm starting to love for the stretch and squeeze it affords at either end of the movement - This is how it went - 1. 2 warm up + 4 working sets of 10-12 reps on the 'pulldown'. The focus here was flushing some blood in the lats, upper back and rear delts, by driving hard with the elbows and making a conscious effort to contract the back hard in the shortened position.  2. 4 working sets of strict BB rows, attempting to pause momentarily in both end of the range  3. Dumbbell rows. 4 hard sets. Again, more stretching, more contracting. Here, I think about letting the weight drift away from my body into a stretch, before driving back towards the hip - I also finished off with a superset of cable reverse flys for rear delts and a cable high pull, for higher total reps, to flush as much blood as possible into the posterior deltoid. Super sore hamstrings from the one-and-half rep Romanians the other day meant it was sensible to avoid deadlifts for this particular workout - Instead, the focus was placed on horizontal pulling movements, using both a barbell and dumbells, and a hybrid row/pulldown machine (which I'm starting to love for the stretch and squeeze it affords at either end of the movement - This is how it went - 1. 2 warm up + 4 working sets of 10-12 reps on the 'pulldown'. The focus here was flushing some blood in the lats, upper back and rear delts, by driving hard with the elbows and making a conscious effort to contract the back hard in the shortened position. 2. 4 working sets of strict BB rows, attempting to pause momentarily in both end of the range 3. Dumbbell rows. 4 hard sets. Again, more stretching, more contracting. Here, I think about letting the weight drift away from my body into a stretch, before driving back towards the hip - I also finished off with a superset of cable reverse flys for rear delts and a cable high pull, for higher total reps, to flush as much blood as possible into the posterior deltoid.
