"I think that to be really really good you have to come from some place inside that I'm just not sure I have." #TurpsFilmReview (9.5/10) NOCTURNAL ANIMALS is the second directorial effort from fashion designer Tom Ford after 2009s 'A Single Man' and boy is it hypnotizing. While I haven't seen A Single Man, I've heard only good things about it, and the case is the same with 'Animals'. The narrative is structured as a story within a story, and while the concept itself isn't exactly groundbreaking, the delivery and execution absolutely is. Very seldom do you see an all-star cast deliver such astounding performances on every level. Absolutely EVERYONE here brings there A-game and, for some, the best performance of their career. Amy Adams has simply never been better. Her tantalizing portrayal of a depressed, but very wealthy art gallery owner is subdued yet gushing with emotion. The screenplay leans heavily on her ability to express emotion without dialogue, and she more than delivers. Michael Shannon's filmography has no shortage of 'indie-southerner' roles (Take Shelter, Midnight Special, Mud, etc.), but this is hands down his most gritty and realistic thus far. He possesses this ability to exhibit social ticks (in this case grunting/coughing) that rivals Gyllenhaal's blinking in 'Prisoners'. Speaking of which, this isn't necessarily Jake Gyllenhaal's best performance, but it doesn't fall very short of those that are. Then we have Aaron Taylor-Johnson who blew me away with his staggering portrayal of a man consumed by pure evil. I'm not going to discuss his performance any further because it has to be seen to believed. There's not a whole lot in the way of shock value like I was expecting, at least as far as the narrative is concerned. Its strongest idea (being a story within a story) is one it borrowed from other films before it like Forrest Gump, but instead of just blatantly copying them, it builds on that idea and creates something unique and new. Ford has also already established his own unique camera work and scene cutting techniques that will certainly elevate him to stand out among other great filmmakers of today. (continued in comments)
Wonderverse 2: True Colors Pt.1 _________________________________________ Huntress Log: I received a text from Conner and I went over to his apartment in Star City, I had a feeling that he'd need to get some stitches so I brought a first aid kit with me. I entered the room and he's working out... without a shirt on... or pants... just boxers with a Batman logo on them... must resist... lewd behavior. Conner: "Oh... hey babe, how are you?" Helena: "H-Hey Conny, I'm alright... sorry about cutting our date short yesterday." Conner: "Hey it's ok, water under the bridge... what's with the first aid kit?" Helena: "Um... I thought you were hurt so I rushed over her so I could stitch you up." Conner: "Oh ok. So do you want to take a picture because you've been staring at my abs since you walked through the door." Helena: "Oh... sorry it's just your body and your hot-Hot? Why did I say hot I mean you look amazing and I... I'm totally butchering this moment aren't I?" Conner: "Nah your good. So what do you wanna do?" Huntress Log: DONTSAYSEXDONTSAYSEXDONTSAYSEXDONTSAYSEXDONTSAYSEX! Helena: "How about we cuddle on the couch and watch Robin Hood?" Huntress Log: Good girl mom would be proud. Conner: "Sounds good, also sorry for the mess... I've been trying to find my dad recently and I had to dig through some files." Helena: "Wait... you don't know what happened to your dad?" Conner: "What do you mean?" Helena: "Well... Conny... Oliver Queen is your father and he's dead... he's been dead for five years." Conner: "W-What?" Helena: "I thought you knew and I thought that's why you became Green Arr-" Conner: "YOU KNEW THIS AND YOU DIDN'T TELL ME?!" Helena: "Conner calm down." Conner: "YOU CLAM DOWN!! I BARELY KNEW MY FATHER AND YOUR TELLING ME HE'S DEAD?!" Helena: "Yes Conner... I'm sorry... I thought tha-" Conner: "That I'd just say 'Oh sweet I'm continuing the legacy' well guess what Hel... I'm pissed that you didn't tell me this shit!!" Helena: "Look you sonvabitch I-" Conner: "Oh hell no! I'm no son of a bitch... I'm the air to a bastard... and I can't believe you kept this from me!" Helena: "I'm sorry Conny." Conner: "I'm not sorry for this though."
Counting down the top ten films of 2016. In my review I focused on the film's message I think this time around I'd like to spotlight Arrival's other amazing attributes. First off, the tone: it's deliciously ominous. Denis Villeneuve creates a real sense of dread and tension when Amy Adams and her crew make contact with the heptapods, the film's bizarre alien species. It would have been easy to design familiar humanoid shapes for the aliens but it took real imagination and guts to make them less relatable. This forces both the audience and the crew to feel isolated and frightened. Never fully aware of what these creatures are capable of, adding to the film's mystery. It's this disconnect that allows the film to drip dramatic tension at every minute. Why are they here? They look horrific, can their motives be anything but? The answers are even more interesting than the questions. Arrival truly is one of the best films of 2016 and I imagine will live on as a Science Fiction classic for many years to come. #bestfilms2016#2016#amyadams#arrival
. I had an existential crisis at the Oscars, sitting next to Sean Penn and Meryl Streep, and being like, 'what am I doing here? I don't belong here'. - It is the preview of our future that come true soon. Ending makes me think 'infra-world' of Les fourmis written by Bernard Werber. Anyway, the movie's color impression, soft voice and dialogue between Theodore and Samantha and photographs just for them(namely songs👌). It was calm and warm movie. Someday, i hope that they would meet together at the space of a word of a book that they cherish the most!
