Don't think that being shredded is the same as being healthfully lean. Far too many people unrealistically think they can achieve extreme levels of conditioning and somehow sustain it indefinitely with no negative metabolic impact.  _ I love competing and I love being shredded. Pushing the threshold of my physical discomfort and hitting insanely low levels of bodyfat is- in fact- a process I enjoy. But, although I am lean year round I am NOT stage shredded. Its important to understand the difference.  _ When you're single digit bodyfat your hair gets brittle, your skin gets dry, you're moody and cranky, your joints hurt, you have headaches, your digestion gets all out of whack, you are lethargic, likely have trouble sleeping, and in general feel pretty miserable. Its a temporary condition- not one you can sustain. Bodybuilding is about achieving a very specific look for a very short amount of time. You can't think that your contest prep physique can or should be your permanent condition. FOCUS ON THE PROCESS. #transformationtuesday  _ Success is cumulative. It happens only when consistent action is taken in the direction of your goals. Because coffee has a diuretic effect (increases your urination) it's become somewhat of an unwritten health "rule" that coffee causes or contributes to dehydration. But think about it- water increases the frequency with which you urinate as well, does that mean you shouldn't drink water? _ THE FACTS: 1. A 2005 extensive study found that  caffeine containing beverages as part of a normal lifestyle did NOT have a dehydrating effect. Several studies since have confirmed this. 2. Just because something makes you pee does not mean it's dehydrating you. Therefore coffee can actually help contribute to your daily fluid requirement. 3. Coffee consumption has a number of health benefits. It can help lower blood pressure, combat depression and dementia, reduce your risk of type II diabetes, and protect against liver cancer 4. Moderate coffee consumption enhances cognitive function, improves memory and helps with focus. 5. Coffee DOES impact everyone differently. It’s well understood that there are different genotypes that determine your body’s ability to metabolize caffeine, so it’s not a stretch to think that this might mean the diuretic effects of caffeine would vary from person to person. _ Bottom line: Coffee consumption is healthy (in moderation) and not dehydrating. There is nothing wrong with crunches and side bends- but I like to use a lot of "non-traditional" exercises to help activate my abs and core and train them to stabilize and resist movement.  _ Today I did some wall walks with shoulder taps to combine core, hip and shoulder stabilization. The goal is not to just half ass meander up the wall but to engage the glutes, quads, hips, core and shoulders. You don't just want to build stability in this position but you also want to HOLD stability throughout the whole exercise.  This also means maintaining control on the descent and walking back down off the wall into a plank position. These last few weeks of prep have been particularly difficult. Calories have been lower then normal and I've had to push harder then I did last year.  I'm tired. I'm hungry. My joints ache. I have migraines. I don't sleep well. It's not that I want it any less, but my body is fighting me more then usual. People assume that the process becomes easier with time, but the reality is that it becomes so much harder. With every hard push for extreme conditioning the body gets smarter and more resistant. The Myth of Protein Timing 👉🏻SWIPE! _ The idea behind protein timing is that if you eat protein immediately after training it will lead to bigger gains in strength and muscle. But research doesn’t actually prove this works.  _ There are three things to consider when thinking about protein timing that are scientifically backed: _ 1. The magic window is a myth. Studies show that your muscles have an elevated sensitivity to protein that lasts at least 24 hours and can go up to 48. It's true that the effect is higher immediately pwo and does diminish but because there’s not a huge post-exercise drop off in muscle protein synthesis, you don’t have to rush to pound a shake. It probably won't make or break you.  _ 2. Total protein intake matters most. For the average active individual who is just trying to be healthy and manage weight, protein timing won’t make a huge difference if you aren't getting enough total protein intake across the day. _ 3. Eating before you train is just as effective. Depending on the size of a meal, amino acid, glucose, and insulin levels in your blood peak anywhere from 1-3 hours after eating- your muscles’ “absorptive state” where they’re most receptive to protein. After that, it takes 3 to 6 hours for those blood levels to fall back down. So if you eat a protein-rich meal within 1 or 2 hours pre-workout you'll still reap the benefits of protein timing.  _ In general- for the average active person, I suggest trying to get between .75-1g protein per lb of bodyweight a day. The one exception would be athletes cutting calories, or bodybuilders in prep, who may need more. Once you consume enough total protein THEN you could turn to protein timing to help give you an edge. As a general guideline, try to get 15-30g of protein within 1-2 hours both pre and pwo. As long as you time your workout between those meals and you’ll be fine.
