This sport has been one of the greatest teachers of my life. Competing has taught me the value of hard work. It's shown me the power in seeking satisfaction not through attention or achievement, but through commitment and effort. In bodybuilding, you get of it what you put in. If you succeed you know it's the direct result of your persistence and dedication. And if you fail, you'll know it's because you didn't do what you needed to do. I often program glute bridges and hip thrusts for my clients- because I find them to be superior for targeting the glutes, but like any exercise, the hip thrust can become problematic if performed incorrectly.  _ There's been chatter that movements like the glute bridge or the hip thrust are damaging to the low back. But I don't buy into that at all. Setup, weight selection, and ultimately movement execution are what determine the safety of an exercise, not the exercise itself. Many people set up for the glute bridge or hip thrust haphazardly and as a result, shift the tension away from the glutes and onto the low back, which not only defeats the whole purpose of the exercise but also can set you up for back pain or potential injury.  _ My main suggestion is that with any movement, you have to take your unique structure into account. Just as everyone has some individuality to their squat stance or deadlift form, your positioning for the glute bridge or hip thrust is going to likely need some tweaking. For example the setup of someone who is 6'5" is going to look entirely different then the set up for someone who is 5'2". I suggest you play with the exercise and manipulate the variables to find positioning and a set up that works for you.  _ •Change the width of your foot placement. •Change the distance of your feet in relation to your glutes •Manipulate the position of your knees in relation to your hips •Adjust your bench height. Poorly chosen bench height will cause unwanted flexion and extension at the lumbar spine. Many times people struggle because of bench height. #preworkoutmeal from today: _ •Peppercorn rubbed seared Ahi Tuna •56g cooked spaghetti squash •56g roasted organic carrots •66g cooked white basmati rice (15g carb worth) •1/2 tsp EVOO •Sea salt _ THOUGHT: There’s this misconception that those of us who adhere to some form of clean eating, macro or calorie counting, or other method of dietary structure live life unsatisfied with what we eat- that healthy food is bland, or boring, or repetitive, or tasteless. It's honestly none of the above, at least for me. For the most part I enjoy all of my meals (except while in prep). What's more, I don't dine out, use a meal delivery service or employ some private chef. I rarely ever eat out and I actually love cooking- both my own food and my husbands. _ Don't think that dedication to your goals means having to sacrifice enjoyment of your food, because it doesn't. Even if you're not currently creative in the kitchen that doesn't mean you can't learn to be. Even utilizing simple tweaks like spices, seasonings, and cooking methods can provide enough of a variance to help prevent slip ups. Learning to work more versatility and flavor into your menu is vital to making healthy eating something that is sustainable. I don't ever eat junk (literally, ever) and I seldom suffer dietary boredom. Clean eating doesn't mean boiled chicken and broccoli or plain tilapia and asparagus.
